Sacred Space: How I learned what a home really is
One day I was walking past a used book shop. In the windows stood many books. I was headed elsewhere, my gaze unfocussed, but suddenly, my eyes landed on a title: Sacred Space, by Denise Linn. It pulled me like a magnet. Other tasks forgotten, I answered a powerful call to go into the shop and request that book. I took it home and read it cover to cover in two days (despite the fact that I was mothering a toddler!). In the months and years that followed, my understanding of how we relate to indoor space was forever changed. It’s easy to take an ever-present blessing for granted. Most of us are fortunate to be sheltered from birth. Every day we walk in and out the door. Every night we lay down to rest, safe from wind, rain, heat and cold. Houses shield us from danger and discomfort, and within them, we may create the world according to our own sense of beauty and comfort. They are a gift to all layers of our being. Without them, we would be bereft. |
Our home is more than a physical structure.
It is, in fact, a layer of our own selves.

Why do we do space clearing?
When we recognize the home as a layer of self, we understand that it needs more than just physical care. Maintenance, tidying, and cleaning are essential to the wellbeing of a home or any other building. But we ourselves need more than just grooming, feeding, and regular health checkups. From time to time, we need deeper revitalization. And sometimes, we need support to recover from upsetting or traumatic experiences. The home’s needs are no different |
How do we know when to do space clearing?
We mend things when they’re broken. We tidy when there’s too much stuff lying about. And we clean to manage the eternal buildup of dust and grime. When these things are done, we feel better – usually much better. But how can we tell when it’s time to do space clearing?
Each of us has an intuitive sense of what a well-kept environment feels like. This is what alerts us when it’s time to care for our space. Mending, tidying, and cleaning will go a long way toward restoring balance in a built space. But sometimes our instincts tell us that more is needed. Perhaps something feels off? Or perhaps a change is needed to support shifts taking place in our lives? Moves, new jobs, births, merging households, divorces, graduations, in-home hospice care, deaths, and many other significant events can shake up our lives and require us to change the way we occupy space.

All of these events are also registered by the space itself, whose task is to hold us in the best possible way at all times. Our experiences and emotions impress themselves into the body of the place where they unfold. And whether we characterize them as positive or negative, eventually their energy no longer resonates with the people we are becoming. Space clearing is like taking a broom and a polishing cloth to the energy of a space. It activates conversation between you and this protective outer layer of yourself, reinvigorating your relationship with place.
How do we do space clearing?
Each time we clean or maintain our home, we enact a level of space clearing. This sort of regular care is the basis of relationship with indoor space. Healthy relationships involve reciprocity. Our buildings nurture and support us through all of life’s joys and sadness. Through care, we show our gratitude. And they can feel it.

Care is absorbed by our space and reflected back to us
in an ongoing, reciprocal spiral of kindness.

On the special occasions when we invoke an energetic renewal of space, our conversation with place moves to a new level. Now it’s time to quiet the mind and engage intuition. The space can tell you where attention is needed. If you live or work in a place, very likely you already know. You’ve probably been feeling it for a while.
Space clearing can focus on four areas:
The process of clearing brings our space to a place of neutrality. This prepares it to receive blessings and to partner with us in manifesting intentions. Blessing our home is a powerful act of relationship-building. Into a clear and open space, we speak our gratitude, and our love. We clarify our needs and our intentions, so the space can do exactly what it wants to do, which is to help us live the life we want. |
