Land Healing

Land healing is a process of connecting with land for the purpose of
initiating or deepening relationship, inquiring about the land’s needs,
and offering love and care at a spiritual level.

Why do we do land healing?
Many years ago I wandered in the woods until I felt called to stop and rest in a large nest formed by the branches of a fallen tree. It was cozy in there, but the view was a bit limited. I sat for a while, studying the bark, the soil, the fallen leaves, the insect life. And then I found myself conversing with the land itself.

The land asked me to put my hands on the earth, to sense its energy, and to hold space while this energy took on a new, healthier quality. I did this, and after a while the healing felt complete. Curious, I asked the earth,
“Why do you need humans to help with your healing?
Isn’t nature capable of healing itself?”
Then I was quiet, listening. In the silence, I heard this:

“The land is perfectly capable of healing itself. But we desire the help of humans. The healing is better, more complete, more integrated when you participate.”

We do land healing because the earth wishes it, and because we ourselves are healthier, more radiant, and more connected to our places when we do so.

How do we know when to do land healing?
Think about your own body. Is there ever a time when you are in perfect health?

If you’ve lived more than a few years, you likely have a collection of scars and challenges affecting the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of your being. Challenges accumulate over time, and need regular attention from healers.
Land healing is a blessing at any time.
We do it when we feel called – by curiosity, by a sense of need, or when the idea returns to mind again and again. There's always more to do.

How do we do land healing?
There are many, many ways to heal the earth. But there is just one principle that governs them all:
Listen to the land.

We humans, with our clever minds, are never short on ideas for what to do. But without listening to the land, we're like a doctor who examines a patient and enacts a therapy without having asked a single question. And like that well-meaning doctor, we may fail to help. We may even inadvertently cause harm.
So how do we listen to the land?
Step number one:
we slow down.
The land is messaging us constantly. And, at a certain level, we are constantly registering the land’s signals. But to bring the voice of place into our conscious awareness, we must quiet our bodies and minds, and open our senses. Intuition – our ability to receive more subtle, nuanced messages – will follow.

Intuition is mysterious to most of us. Yet all of us have intuitive capacities. Its mechanisms are different from person to person. It can occur through the senses, both physical and non-physical. Sometimes it comes as a “just knowing.” Anyone can develop intuition through independent effort, and, ideally, with assistance from an experienced helper.

When we know how to listen, the land can answer important questions for us, such as:

  • What are you like right now?
  • How do you want to be?
  • How do you want to feel?

Once these questions have been answered, the land can help us choose an approach to healing and guide us as we enact it.

So what next?
Perhaps you sense your own potential to heal land, but want mentorship? Or perhaps you'd like to experience land healing under the guidance of a skilled practitioner?
